himself with God. It can be compared to a ladder. This ladder starts from the lowest physical state of the living entity and rises to the perfect realization of the Self in the pure spiritual state. Different parts of the ladder are known by different names depending on the different heights. However, the entire ladder is called yoga and is divided into three parts: jnana yoga, dhyana yoga, and bhakti yoga. The beginning of the ladder is called the “yoga-rukshu” state. The last step is called “yoga-rudha”.

As far as the Ashtanga Yoga system is concerned, the initial attempts to enter meditation through rules of life and various yoga postures (almost physical exercises) are considered as kamyakarmakalapas. All such kalams lead to the attainment of a state of perfect mental equanimity for sense control. When a person becomes skilled in meditation, he gives up all mental agitations that cause disturbance.

However, a person in Krishna consciousness is always thinking of Krishna and is in a state of meditation from the very beginning. Because he is constantly engaged in Krishna’s service, he is considered to have given up all material activities.

Thus, the one who is devoted to his work

yada — when; hi — certainly; na — without; indriya artesu — in sense enjoyment; karmasu — in sensual activities; na anusajjate — not at all; sarva sankalpa — all material desires; sannyasi — one who has given up; yoga arudhah — one who is advanced in yoga, tada — then; ucyathe — is said to be.

A person is said to be advanced in yoga when he abandons all material desires and neither works for sense gratification nor engages in lustful activities.
