The greedy, i.e. the greedy, waste their time in worldly pursuits with their immense love for family, society, and country. Generally, a man is attached to household life, i.e., to his wife, children, and other family members, due to the disease of touch. The greedy person thinks that he can save his family from death or that his family and society can save him from death. Such worldly attachment is also seen in the lower animals. They also protect their offspring. Arjuna, being intelligent, was able to understand that his affection for his family and his desire to save them from death were the causes of his troubles. He realized that even though the duty of war was waiting for him, he was unable to fulfill his duty due to his weakness of greed. That is why he asked the Supreme Guru, Shri Krishna, to give a sure solution. He surrendered himself to Lord Krishna as a disciple. He wanted to stop friendly discussions. The discussions between disciples are serious. Arjuna now wants to speak seriously before the authentic Guru. That is why Lord Krishna became the first Guru of the knowledge of Bhagavad Gita. Arjuna became the first disciple of the understanding of the Gita. The way in which Arjuna understood the Gita is explained in the Gita itself. However, foolish worldly scholars comment that man does not need to take refuge in the form of Lord Krishna, but should take refuge in the unborn in Lord Krishna. There is no difference in the inner parts of Lord Krishna. Without this understanding, one who tries to understand the Gita becomes a fool.
nature; prchhami – I ask; tvam you; dharma – in dharma; samnuda – being deluded; chetah – in the heart; yat – whatever; sreyah – all-encompassing; svat – what will happen; nishitam – certainly; bruhi – tell me; me; sadhi – tat – adi: me – to me; shishyah – disciple; te – to you; aham – instruct; maam – I; tvam – to you; prapannam – I take refuge.
Due to the sin of greed, I have now become obsessed with my religion and have lost peace. In this situation, I ask you to tell me with certainty what is best for me. I am now your disciple and refuge. Please instruct me.
Explanation: According to the law of nature, the increase of worldly karmas causes everyone to be troubled. Since there is trouble at every step, it is good for a person to approach a certified Guru who can guide them properly to fulfill their life’s purpose. All the Vedic scriptures advise us to approach a certified Guru to get liberation from the troubles of life that arise without our desire. The troubles of life are like a fire that burns without anyone trying to ignite it. Similarly, the situation in the world is such that even if we do not want that trouble, the troubles of life continue to arise without our effort. No one wants a fire, but still we get troubled when it happens. That is why Vedic knowledge advises that in order to solve the troubles of life and understand the knowledge of the solution, one must approach a Guru who is in the lineage. A person who has a certified Guru knows everything. That is why a person should not remain in worldly troubles and should approach the Guru. This is the essence of this verse.
Who is a person in worldly turmoil? He who has not understood the problems of life is such. The troubled person is described in the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (3.8.10) as follows: “Yo va etadaksharam gargyaviditvā smallokat praiti sa krupanah” A person who has not solved the problems of life as a human being, and thus has not understood the knowledge of self-realization and leaves this world like a dog or a pig, is a greedy person. Human birth is the most valuable asset for a living being. He can use it to solve the problems of life. Therefore, one who does not use this opportunity well is called a greedy person. On the other hand, a Brahmin, i.e. one who has taken this birth to solve all the problems of life
