The Lord is instructing. Even if such an order gives some relief to the situation, one should still perform the duties of dependence on Lord Krishna. Because it is the natural state of the living entity, the eternal natural state of the living entity, to be dependent on the desires of the Lord, and without the cooperation of that deity, he could not be happy. That is why Arjuna was ordered by Lord Krishna, like a general, to fight. For the pleasure of the Lord, everyone should sacrifice everything and at the same time perform the duties of the divine without attachment. Arjuna did not have to think about the order of the Lord, he just had to execute it. The Lord is the soul of all souls. Therefore, one who is completely dependent on the one Varamatma without any thought of his own, in other words, one who is completely in Krishna consciousness, is called a spiritual soul. “Nirasih” means that a person should work only as per the order of his master and not expect results. A clerk who counts money for his master does not claim even a single penny as his own. Similarly, a person should realize that nothing in this world belongs to anyone, but everything belongs to God. This is the real meaning of “mayi” (mine). When a person works in such Krishna consciousness, he does not show any attachment to anything. This consciousness is called “nirmama” (nothing is mine). If there is any reluctance to carry out such a strict order without any thought for even nominal relatives in kinship, it should be immediately abandoned. Accordingly, a person becomes “vigatajvara” (free from agitation and intoxication). Everyone has to perform a specific type of work according to his nature and condition. As mentioned above, all such work should be performed in Krishna consciousness. That is what leads a person to the path of liberation.
He is not situated in sensual activities. Otherwise, a person cannot live without some activity, and therefore he must be situated in sense gratification. In the absence of Krishna consciousness, a person is always situated in activities about himself or about his family. But a person in Krishna consciousness does everything for the pleasure of Krishna and is therefore completely detached from sense gratification. One who does not have such a feeling must mechanically try to escape from material desires before reaching the last step of the yoga ladder.
The soul is the one who is freed from the bondage of the soul, and the soul is the one who is freed from the bondage of the soul.
uddhareth – must be uplifted; atmana – by the mind; armanam – the conditioned soul; atmanam – the conditioned soul; na avasadayeth should not be caused to fall; atmana – mind; eva – certainly; hi – truly; atmanah – to the conditioned soul; bandhuh – friend; atmana – mind; eva – certainly; rivuh – enemy; atmanah – to the conditioned soul.
Man must elevate himself with the help of his mind, but he must not bring himself down. The mind is both a friend and an enemy to the conditioned soul.
Purport: The word atman refers to the body, the mind, and the soul in different contexts. In the system of yoga, the mind and the conditioned soul are particularly important. Since the mind is the central subject in the practice of yoga, atman here refers to the mind. The purpose of the system of yoga is to control the mind and pull it away from interest in sense objects. It is emphasized here that the mind must be trained as a pull to pull the conditioned soul out of the mire of ignorance. In material existence, man is under the influence of the mind and the senses. It is because the mind is filled with false pride, wanting to dominate material nature, that the pure soul is actually entangled in the material world. Therefore, the mind must be trained so that it is not attracted to the lusts of nature: in that way the conditioned soul is saved. Man should not bring himself down by attraction to sense objects. The more a person is attracted to sense objects, the more he becomes entangled in samsara. Always keep the mind engaged in Krishna consciousness.
